L-theanine is an amino acid naturally found in tea that researchers have studied for stress-related symptoms and sleep. Human trials have examined questions such as time to fall asleep, sleep disturbance, and how satisfied people feel with their sleep.

Pure Patch Sleep Patch lists 3 mg of L-theanine per patch in a melatonin-free formula. It is included in our nighttime approach alongside magnesium glycinate, apigenin, and GABA, with CoQ10 and black pepper extract.

What is L-theanine?

L-theanine is a specific compound found in tea, not a tea blend and not caffeine. A study that isolates L-theanine asks a different question from a study of a cup of tea, which contains a mixture of compounds. The distinction is especially useful when reading both daytime-focus and nighttime-sleep articles about this ingredient.

For a nighttime routine, the interest is in calm and the experience of sleep. L-theanine is also discussed in daytime-focus research, so checking the purpose of the particular study or product helps make sense of these different uses.

What have human studies found?

In a 2019 trial, 30 adults took oral L-theanine or placebo in a crossover design. The L-theanine period used 200 mg daily for four weeks. Some questionnaire measures of sleep, including time to fall asleep and sleep disturbance, improved relative to placebo. Read the randomized trial.

Another trial in 46 people with generalized anxiety disorder did not find an advantage on overall insomnia severity, although reported sleep satisfaction improved. It used L-theanine alongside existing treatment, which is a different setting from an ordinary nighttime routine. Read that trial.

The findings are mixed: certain sleep measures improved, while the overall insomnia measure in the second study did not. Both studies tested oral L-theanine. They did not test our patch, its 3 mg formula amount, or its absorption.

What does “better sleep” mean in a study?

Different measurements can describe different experiences. Feeling more satisfied with sleep, reporting fewer disturbances, falling asleep sooner, and recording longer sleep are not identical outcomes.

For example, feeling more rested is an experience someone reports; time asleep can be recorded separately. The studies above used questionnaires to explore several parts of the sleep experience.

Is L-theanine the same as melatonin?

No. L-theanine is an amino acid; melatonin is a hormone. A formula can contain L-theanine without containing melatonin, as Pure Patch Sleep Patch does.

Our melatonin-free guide explains why we offer a nighttime formula without added melatonin.

Why pair L-theanine with other ingredients?

Our Sleep Patch formula combines L-theanine with magnesium glycinate, apigenin, and GABA, plus CoQ10 and black pepper extract. L-theanine is one part of that complete nighttime formula.

The practical benefit is having the formula in one patch. The complete ingredient guide shows all six ingredients and their package-listed amounts, so you can see the whole product rather than evaluating one name in isolation.

Common questions about L-theanine

Does an L-theanine ingredient mean a product contains caffeine?

No. L-theanine and caffeine are distinct compounds. Check the complete product formula for caffeine rather than assuming that an ingredient associated with tea includes all of tea's components. Sleep Patch's listed formula does not include caffeine.

Is L-theanine the same as GABA?

No. They are separate ingredients and appear separately on our package. You can read the GABA guide to understand that ingredient's biological role and the research on oral supplementation.
