Apigenin and Sleep: The Compound, Chamomile, and the Research
Learn what apigenin is, how it differs from chamomile extract, and what sleep research can tell us about this Pure Patch Sleep Patch ingredient.

Apigenin is a plant flavonoid found in chamomile and other plants. Its connection with nighttime routines comes from research into the compound and the chamomile preparations that contain it.
Pure Patch Sleep Patch lists 2 mg of apigenin per patch. It is one of the four ingredients highlighted on the front of our melatonin-free Sleep pouch, alongside magnesium glycinate, L-theanine, and GABA.
What is apigenin?
A flavonoid is a type of plant compound. Apigenin is the name of one particular flavonoid, rather than a general term for herbs or antioxidants. Chamomile contains apigenin, but a chamomile extract also contains other substances.
Our package names apigenin as the ingredient, rather than a whole-chamomile blend. The name tells you which compound appears in the formula.
Why is apigenin discussed for sleep?
Laboratory research has explored apigenin's interaction with receptor sites associated with GABA signaling, a system involved in regulating nerve activity. These experiments help explain interest in the compound; they are preclinical findings, rather than human sleep outcomes. Read an original receptor study.
Researchers have also studied chamomile preparations in people. Those trials offer a closer look at the sleep experience, with results that depend on the preparation and group studied.
What did human chamomile studies find?
A 2011 placebo-controlled pilot study in 34 adults with chronic insomnia tested oral chamomile extract. It did not find significant differences between groups on the recorded sleep-diary outcomes. The preparation contained multiple chamomile compounds, not isolated apigenin. Read the pilot trial.
A separate 2017 trial in 60 older adults reported better sleep-quality scores after oral chamomile extract compared with a control. It used a different group and preparation. Read the older-adult trial.
The results are mixed. Both trials used oral chamomile extract, so they do not isolate apigenin's effect or establish an effect from Pure Patch Sleep Patch. This is the distinction between the human extract studies and our ingredient.
Apigenin, chamomile tea, and a sleep patch are different products
| Name | What you are looking at | What to keep separate |
|---|---|---|
| Apigenin | A specific compound | The ingredient named on our label |
| Chamomile tea | A brewed plant preparation | An oral drink containing a mixture of plant compounds |
| Chamomile extract | A preparation containing several plant compounds | The preparation used in the human studies above |
| Pure Patch Sleep Patch | A wearable multi-ingredient formula | One patch containing 2 mg of listed apigenin |
An extract's total amount includes more than its apigenin content. That is why a chamomile extract and an apigenin ingredient have different names and amounts on a label.
What is apigenin's place in our formula?
Apigenin brings a named plant flavonoid to our nighttime formula. We pair it with magnesium glycinate, L-theanine, and GABA, plus CoQ10 and black pepper extract, in one melatonin-free patch.
The 2 mg per-patch amount appears with the other named ingredients in the full Sleep Patch ingredient guide. The result is one wearable product, with no tea to brew or capsule to swallow as part of using it.
Common questions about apigenin and sleep
Is apigenin a form of melatonin?
No. They are different compounds. Sleep Patch includes apigenin and excludes melatonin. Our melatonin-free guide explains why we offer that choice.
Is an extract amount the same as an apigenin amount?
No. An extract can contain multiple compounds. Read the exact ingredient and unit rather than comparing numbers attached to different substances.
